History

There are not many state parks within Florida. This is because the state has many plants and animals that are endangered. That is one of the reasons why Oscar Scherer State Park is so unique. The park became official in 1955. Elsa Scherer Burrows was the original owner of 462 acres in South Creek Ranch. When she died, she left the ranch to the state. The owner is also where the state park gets its name, since Elsa elected to name the area after her father Oscar. The park is now known for its wildlife such as scrub-jays, tortoises, and indigo snakes.

About

Oscar Scherer State Park is a beautiful park in southwestern Florida. There is always something fun to do within the park! Whether you are looking to go canoeing, fishing, relaxing, picnicking, hiking, or sitting and watching the stunning wildlife, this park has it all. The picnic areas within the park have grills and a pavilion can be enjoyed by your families for a fee. The visitor’s center also has educational videos and is only 15 minutes from the various hiking trails.

A blackwater stream called South Creek runs through Oscar Scherer State Park and goes into two beautiful freshwater lakes. This area is where you can enjoy water-based activities like canoeing. Of course, you can also simply sit on the banks and watch the wildlife, including several beautiful bird species that inhabit the area.

In the South Creek Picnic Area, you are able to access accommodations for those with sight, hearing, and mobility impairments as well as wheelchair access to places within the park like fishing spots, the drinking fountains, and the viewing areas to see the wildlife. The Legacy Trail also has paved trails which are perfect not only for hiking but for biking and rollerblading, too!

The ranger’s station is open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. In order to enter the park, it costs $4 per car if there is just one person in the car and $5 if there are 2-8 people within the vehicle. Pedestrians and bikers pay $2 per person. The park is open from 8 a.m. until Sunday 365 days per year.
