Myakka River State Park

The Myakka River State Park is a truly breathtaking spot to choose for a trek into Florida’s nature. The park is only 16 miles from Siesta Key, so it will be easily within reach during your stay on the Siesta Key Gulf Coast. At this location, you’ll see a wide variety of native wildlife and habitats, including oak hammocks, prairie lands, and grasslands.

You’ll even find a romantic canopy walk that offers stunning bird’s-eye views of the Myakka River basin!

There is the option of a lengthy 39-mile walk. It’s made up of four separate loops, so it’s easy to plan a suitable walk for your family’s experience, skill level, and attention span.

Oscar Scherer State Park

This is an absolutely stunning state park near Siesta key that offers around 15 miles of hiking trails. Keep your eyes peeled for tortoise dens, scrub jays, and other classic examples of Florida wildlife. This park is a lot smaller than the Myakka River State Park; however, it does have plenty of excellent, useful facilities. For this reason, we tend to recommend this option for families. Some of the trails are even able to accommodate strollers and wheelchairs. You can even head to the park for an overnight camping trip.

Ted Sperling Park Trail

The Ted Sperling Park Trail is fairly short, at just 0.9 miles, making it perfect for families with young children or for hikers looking for a casual stroll. The trail takes you along a boarded walkway through the land that sits right near the ocean. You’ll see all kinds of fascinating plant life, and you may glimpse a few exotic birds!

At the end of the trail, you’ll reach the lookout point where you’ll stand right on the edge of the water. You may also glimpse some kayakers exploring the famous mangrove tunnels in the area.
