Rent a Bike and Cycle your Way through Siesta Key!

No matter the season, Siesta Key is the perfect place for a bike ride. Enjoy the sea breeze and island life as you ride along the beach! Due to the island’s small size, too many cars easily cause congestion, so not only are bike rides great exercise, but they are also a far more efficient form of transportation, too. Get from one end of the island to the other as quickly and conveniently as possible!

Is It Safe to Bike on Siesta Key?

The short answer is yes! Of course, it is always important to be aware of your surroundings, to obey local traffic laws, and especially for children, to wear a helmet. That said, if you take these precautions, there’s no need to worry. During low traffic hours especially, Siesta Key is a very safe place to bike.

Where Can I Bike?

There is truly no shortage of great Siesta Key bike paths! The hard packed beaches are a great place to start. Lido Beach provides a quiet ride, which takes you along the stores in Siesta Village. Bike paths on Longboat Key have stunning Gulf views. Across the island, you’ll find 6 miles of beach to ride along, and there is only one section between the lifeguard stands near Siesta Village where you will need to walk your bike.

If you venture right outside of Siesta Key, there are many other pristine trails to explore. The Legacy Trail is a local favorite, stretching from Sarasota all the way to Venice of Nokomis Beach. It is an extremely safe trail winding through many different types of wildlife. There are 15 rest stops along the way which include trailheads with bike access points and free parking. The entire trail extends over 12 miles. Entrance points can be found at Potter Park, Oscar Scherer State Park, Laurel Park, Nokomis Park, Patriots Park, and the Venice Train Depot.

Towards Venice, the Legacy Trail meets up with the Venetian Waterway Park trail, which follows the Intercoastal Waterway. It totals just over 10 miles and ends at the Venice Avenue bridge. For the entire way, there are scenic waterfront views. There are breaks in the trail, so keep this in mind if you decide to bike this trail.

Another favorite is Myakka River State Park, which has both paved and unpaved paths for biking. Take a rest stop and enjoy stunning treetop views from the 74-foot tower that provides a birds-eye perspective on local wetlands and trees. Myakka River State Park is also a great place for kayaking, hiking, camping, and fishing.
